John McFarlane OBE, awarded honorary degree from Cranfield

John McFarlane OBE, a leading figure in global banking and an alumnus of Cranfield School of Management, was awarded an honorary degree at the School of Management graduation ceremony held on Friday 15 June at Cranfield. John joined over 300 School of Management students who graduated at this year’s ceremony.

John has been responsible for bank operations in over 50 countries. He is Chairman Designate of Aviva plc and a director of Westfield Holdings and Old Oak Holdings, and is a member of the Cranfield School of Management Advisory Board. Until March this year he was a non-executive director of The Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc. John retired as CEO of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ) in 2007, during which time ANZ became one of Australia’s best performing companies.

Born in Dumfries, Scotland, John has an MA from the University of Edinburgh, an MBA from Cranfield and studied finance at The London Business School. His achievements have been officially recognised with the award of OBE, the Australian Centenary Medal and the inaugural Cranfield School of Management Distinguished Alumnus Award.
