Alan Harrison is Professor of Operations and Logistics at Cranfield School of Management, Director of Research of Cranfield's Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management, and Director of the Executive Doctorate Programme.
After graduating in chemistry at Oxford University, Alan followed a career in senior manufacturing management with Procter and Gamble, BL and GEC. Having been converted to academic life, he joined Warwick Business School in 1986, studying the application of Japanese management methods to UK manufacturing. He completed his doctorate 'Enablers and inhibitors to material flow in different operations environments' at Cranfield School of Management, which he joined in 1996. He is author of Just in Time Manufacturing in Perspective (Prentice Hall, 1992), and joint author of Operations Management, 2nd edition (Pitman, 1998) and of Logistics Management and Strategy - Competing through the Supply Chain with Remko van Hoek, 3rd edition (FT/Prentice Hall, 2008). He has also written numerous articles in both management and academic literatures.
Alan has established an international team of researchers in the Supply Chain Research Centre, which he leads. The Centre has attracted over £5 million in funds from government, research council and industrial sources. Major projects have included service networks in product-service systems, customer responsiveness, aligning marketing and supply strategies and supply chain cost effectiveness (all funded by EPSRC through the Cranfield IMRC), developing process modelling (funded by the World Bank), and one of the largest Knowledge Transfer Partnerships in the country - with Rolls-Royce plc on aftermarket logistics. The Centre is also home to the Agile Supply Chain Research Club, an association of Cranfield faculty and industrial partners who meet quarterly to debate themes based on challenges of 21st century supply chains.
