UK Research Councils

Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)

The ESRC provides funding for research and postgraduate training in economic and social issues. The ESRC site provides details of funding opportunities, a guide to funding and the ESRC's role and its thematic priorities.

Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)

The EPSRC is the largest of the Research Councils and supports research and postgraduate training in engineering and the physical sciences. The site provides details of funding programmes and current calls for proposals. Those who have submitted a proposal may use the 'Grant progress check' to find out which stage it has reached. The site also provides details of current research projects and total funding awarded by institution, department within institution, or by industrial sector.

European Union

British Academy

The British Academy is the national academy for the humanities and the social sciences, There are specific schemes to support research and conferences. For a full list of available schemes see the Guide to Awards.

British Council

The British Council offers joint research programmes designed to promote links and contacts between British and other European higher education, research institutions and laboratories. The HERO web site has further information.

Leverhulme Trust

The Leverhulme Trust was established in 1925, under the Will of the first Lord Leverhulme. At present the Trustees award grants mainly for original research in any field except social policy and welfare; medicine; and school education.

Royal Academy of Engineering

The Royal Academy of Engineering exists to promote excellence in engineering, give advice to government, support engineering education and provide financial sponsorship for engineering research. The awards/schemes section of the site provides details.
