Praxis: Personal Impact and Development
Power and Influence
Power and Influence is for those who want to operate effectively within the strategic direction and ethical arenas of their organisation. The programme is designed for those already familiar with the Centaur model, who want to explore its application at a second level of complexity. As familiarity with the Centaur approach is a prerequisite for the learning on Power and Influence, all delegates will previously have attended a first level Centaur programme either at Cranfield or within their own organisation.
What will I get out of the programme?
You will gain:
- Fresh eyes on a key dimension of your world at work
- A grounded conviction of what you have to give your organisation and how to proceed
- Specific strategies for dealing with individuals who play an unethical political game
- Real excitement about your ability to make a difference.
What is the programme about?
Power and Influence is a daring and committed programme devised to help aspiring leaders enter the political sphere at work with integrity and confidence.
We have found that two well-meant but limiting attitudes hinder naturally ethical individuals from stepping into the strategic domain. These are: ‘politics is morally wrong, it rots your soul!” and “Politics is a waste of time, I just want to get on with the job!” If either of these strikes a chord, Power and Influence is the programme for you.
These attitudes unaddressed rob us of the leaders we need in positions of power and influence in corporate life.
The political “game” like any other can be conducted in the spirit of fair play or with ruthless and self-serving intent. For good people to abstain from involvement because some players act negatively is not a sign of their goodness but of lack of consciousness and responsibility on their part.
Moreover, paying attention to the political situation at work and learning to navigate it is not a “waste of time”. It is a crucial and definitive aspect of leadership.
Attitude change and increased consciousness in delegates are the twin goals of Power and Influence. The programme focuses on the practice of ethical behavior – right action – in and around leadership. This is impeded by the limiting attitudes mentioned above.
Theory will be grounded in practice on this programme through application of it to delegates real-life case studies. The programme is split into two modules allowing follow up of progress and providing an opportunity to explore events that arise between meetings.
Who is the programme for?
Managers who accept that an awareness of organisational politics is an essential part of corporate life. Participants will have taken part in one of the following:
- Breakthrough as a Manager (formerly known as Managing People Effectively)
- Increasing Personal Power.
