I started my working life as an editor of educational books and managed a division of a publishing plc before becoming a management consultant. Recently I have specialized in consulting, coaching and change management with organizations implementing flexible working.

Research Topic

Barriers and enablers of reduced-load working for managers and professionals

Research Issue

What are the barriers faced by professionals and managers wishing to work less? What strategies do they use to overcome these barriers?

The UK workforce profile is changing: 25% of the UK workforce now work part-time, but there is a simultaneous trend, particularly among managers and professionals, towards ‘extreme jobs’ of 60 or 70 hours a week. Research shows that many workers experience a mismatch between their preferred hours, and the jobs available. Organizational culture, career marginalization, and job design have all been cited as potential obstacles to reduced-load working: how are these barriers being overcome?
