Nicholas Durand (MSc Logistics '96):
Comment to Mike: Working in the luxury industry we are very aware that selective distribution is a way to manage our image and thus help us create value. I agree we cannot expect to renege on their quality of living but do we need to have strawberries available 24/7 365 days a year. I believe there is an argument that reducing availability of certain products in certain place in the world at certain time in the year (for instance following seasons) will increase the value of products and therefore growers turnover will be maintained, CO2 will be reduced and the consumer will relearn to value more certain pleasure of our planet, strawberries, salmon, flowers and so on...Surely nobody is at a loss there? What do you think, is 365 days 24/7 availability core to quality of life? And to answer that question if we have to standardise the measure of pollution surely we would also need to standardise the measure of quality of life (other than just look at GDP for instance!). What do you think?
