Research Topic
The proposed research is to investigate how competition and collaboration are manifest within the context of matrix-structured organisations. It will focus on the relationship between groups within an organisation rather than within departments (teamwork) or between different organisations.
Research Issue
The aim of the research is to contribute to a greater understanding of the tension between collaborative and competitive unit or divisional behaviour in the matrix and the impact that this tension has on facilitating intra-organisational processes.
It will address such questions as:
1. How can collaboration be fostered within a structure which has competition inherently embedded in it?
2. Is there an optimal amount of 'competition which fosters organisational effectiveness?
3. Does the primacy of intergroup competition change into collaboration within the organisation over time?
