Pietro Micheli MSc MRes PhD

Lecturer

Centre for Business Performance

 

Pietro Micheli is a Lecturer at the Centre for Business Performance and Fellow of the Advanced Institute of Management (AIM) Research. He was awarded a PhD and a Master by Research in Management from Cranfield School of Management, and a Master in Management and Production Engineering from the Politecnico di Milano. Pietro is a chartered engineer in Italy and also studied for a year at the TU Delft, the Netherlands.

His research and consulting interests focus on organizational performance, particularly in the following areas:   

  • Performance management: Pietro has carried out extensive research on the design, use and impact of performance targets and indicators, and in the introduction of performance improvement initiatives in public and private sector organizations. His research papers have been accepted for publication in leading academic journals such as Long Range Planning, Public Administration Review and the International Journal of Operations and Production Management. He is the director of the Public sector performance roundtable, a research club whose members are executives, directors and managers coming from organizations across the public sector. In the field of performance management, Pietro has worked with, and consulted to, a number of organizations, including Amec, British American Tobacco, British Energy, KLM, Morgan Carbon, Orange, Shell, Abu Dhabi Government, Audit Commission, Council of Europe, Department of Health, House of Lords, National Audit Office, and The Pensions Regulator.  
  • Theory and practice of performance measurement: From a theoretical point of view, Pietro is interested in the philosophical bases of performance measurement and on the use of organization theory in this field. He is currently the guest editor of Long Range Planning's special issue on Strategic Performance Measurement.
  • Connections between research and industry: In 2006-2007 Pietro was part of the Innovation and Productivity Grand Challenge - a major project involving a consortium of five Universities (Cambridge, Cranfield, Imperial College, Liverpool and Loughborough). He has also organized the three 'Connecting research with industry' international conferences, held at Cranfield in 2007, in Rome in 2008, and at the OECD in Paris in 2009. Pietro is also founding member of the Evidence-based management collaborative, a US-based community-of-practice whose aim is to make evidence-informed management a reality.
  • New product development: currently Pietro is working on an international and multi-disciplinary research on the perceptions and impact of product design on performance.    

Pietro has lectured in a number of European academic institutions, run executive courses and workshops, and is a regular speaker at academic and practitioner conferences. He speaks fluent English, Italian, French and Spanish.
