Realising Business Value from IT Assets - call for Academic Partners

Realising Business Value from IT Assets? is a research project sponsored by CA, Inc. (NASDAQ: CA) the world?s leading independent provider of IT management software, and led by Professor Joe Peppard from Cranfield School of Management (UK). The objective of the research is to help organizations develop approaches to understanding and assessing the value of their IT assets (e.g. technology, applications, knowledge, policies, procedures, processes, data, relationship networks ?etc). The findings will also help establish current best practices related to how an organization?s IT asset base can be managed and leveraged to deliver additional value.

As part of the program, Cranfield will engage with other universities and business schools for empirical data collection and analysis following an Open Innovation model. For academic partners interested in joining the research programme, a document providing further information can be downloaded here.

PhD Studentships In Information Systems at Cranfield School of Management

Since 1993, the Information Systems Research Centre (ISRC) at Cranfield School of Management has been conducting pioneering research that seeks to advance both understanding of information systems and technology in organisations, as well as to improve management practice. The fundamental objective of the Centre is to help maximise the value organisations derive from information technology.

The Centre is now inviting applications for full-time PhD studentships, awarded by the UK’s funding council ESRC, which will start in October 2007. In addition, the Centre also has a number of bursaries available, which are awarded on a competitive basis.

The PhD studentships are open to EU candidates only and applicants must satisfy the ESRC’s residential eligibility requirements, details of which can be found on their website at www.esrc.ac.uk.  Each studentship covers full payment of fees at the EU rate for 4 years, plus a stipend of £12,300 per annum (approximately €18,700). Busaries, on the other hand, are open to all applicants.

Potential candidates are strongly advised to visit the Centre’s website (www.cranfield.ac.uk/som/isrc) for details of our range of research activities, forums and educational programmes. Details of the PhD Programme at Cranfield can be found at www.cranfield.ac.uk/som/phd.

Prospective canditates who would like to be considered for either award should, in the first instance, submit a research proposal and current CV to Professor Joe Peppard, Director of the ISRC (j.peppard@cranfield.ac.uk)

Developing Information Capabilities

While many investments in information technology (IT) are now justified on the basis of using information to improve business performance our research highlights that these claims are based on limited understanding of the role that information plays in decision-making processes and the ways in which information systems affect information use.

ISRC Launches Research Project on IT innovation

How does an organization marry the capabilities of new and emerging technologies with business opportunities? How do organizations identify opportunities to deploy new technologies in ways that fundamentally transform not just 'what they do' but 'how they do it'? How can this innovative capability become embedded in the very fabric of an organization? What resources, structures, processes, routines and practices define and shape this capability? How do organizations make sense of new and emerging technologies? These questions capture the essence of a quest that scholars and practitioners have struggled with, ever since IT was first deployed in organizations and are some of the questions that Click here to download brochure.
