After graduating from Cambridge University, Richard spent five years with Rolls Royce in Operational Research and Production Control. After a period at Loughborough University, he joined Anglian Water for the re-organisation of the Water Industry. In five years with Anglian Water he was responsible for implementing several major planning and control systems and held the post of Principal (Business Systems). In 1979 he joined Real Times Systems as Consultant, implementing mini-computer systems across Europe.
He joined Cranfield in 1982 to teach and research in Logistics Systems. During his full-time employment at Cranfield, he directed Open and In-Company Programmes in Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia-Pacific, as well as teaching modelling, network design and inventory management to all the Cranfield postgraduate programmes. He has published in the area of Supply Chain Modelling, Inventory Planning and Network Design. Since retiring from the full-time post of Senior Lecturer, he has continued to work for the Centre for Logistics and Supply Chain Management as a Visiting Fellow. In addition to supply chain problems in the developed world he has worked in Africa and Asia on the logistics problems of developing countries.
