Murray Steele

  

Murray Steele holds Bachelor and Masters degrees in mechanical engineering from the University of Glasgow, and an MBA from Cranfield School of Management. He also has an accounting qualification from the Institute of Certified Accountants. 

He joined the staff of the School in April 1978, and since then has worked in most areas of the School's activities including being Deputy Director of the MBA Programme and Chairman of the School's Alumni Association. He also founded, with a colleague, the School's In-company Management Development function which is now a major activity of the School. In 1989 and 1997 respectively he initiated Cranfield's entry to the executive director and non - executive director development market. 

Through Cranfield, he has gained a broad range of industrial experience, e.g. brewing, IT, leisure, retail, financial services, aerospace, automotive and the public sector. He has worked for major organisations such as HSBC, Citigroup, the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development, Citigroup, 3i, McDonalds, Disney Corporation, Unilever, Scottish & Newcastle, Punch Taverns, BSkyB, Sony, Shell, BP, Amadeus, EMC, Goodyear, Jaguar, Ford, Toyota, Nissan, Porsche and the NHS. 

His international experience includes working in Belgium, France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, Denmark, Turkey, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Australia and the USA. He has facilitated many discussion sessions among groups of senior multinational executives. 

Murray's areas of specialism are strategy development, corporate governance, strategy implementation and change, and leadership, with particular emphasis on, and experience of, working with the top management teams of organisations. He has developed specific expertise in helping senior executives/board directors consider their personal role in implementing strategic change. Much of this expertise is dependent on effective facilitation of group discussions among senior executives of organisations.

His practical experience includes being a non-executive of the Airline Division of British Aerospace which had revenues in excess of £1 billion. From 1985 to 2002, he was Chairman of Orchard Hotels, a start-up hotel company which he created with a colleague and sold successfully to a listed company. Currently he is non-executive chairman of NHFA, a market leading specialist financial adviser, which he recently sold to HSBC, the world's second largest bank; a non-executive director of James Walker Group, an international engineering group, with revenues in excess of £125 million and operations in 15 countries around the world; a non-executive director of CBGH, a 3i backed company, and a trustee of a large educational charity.

He has published several case studies and articles, including, the Roles and Responsibilities of Institutional Investors in the Financial Times, one book and contributed to a number of other books.
