A PhD candidate typically:
- works in academia, either in the UK or overseas or
- has a portfolio career, which may include some teaching, and seeks a research degree that will provide a passport to a future academic career
- has several years' management experience and perhaps some experience of research
- is motivated by a desire to undertake in-depth research that will make a contribution to academic theory
