Andrew Burke MA(NUI), MSc (LSE), DPhil (Oxon)
Director of the Bettany Centre for Entrepreneurial Performance & Economics

Professor Andrew Burke is the founding Director of the Bettany Centre for Entrepreneurial Performance and Economics at Cranfield School of Management. The Centre manages all of the School of Management’s entrepreneurship activities including executive education, research, graduate programmes, technology transfer and networking/practitioner events such as Cranfield Venture Day. Andrew is also the Director of Graduate Programmes and a member of the Executive at Cranfield School of Management. He was a Visiting Research Professor at the Max Planck Institute, Germany 2002-9. Previously, he has been on the faculty of Warwick Business School, the University of Edinburgh, Trinity College Dublin, Balliol College Oxford and the University of St Andrews. He was a Visiting Associate Professor at the Anderson School of Business, UCLA in 2002.
Professor Burke publishes research extensively on entrepreneurial finance, strategy and performance in some of the leading international journals including the Harvard Business Review, the Journal of Management Studies, Regional Studies, the International Journal of Industrial Organization, Small Business Economics, and the Oxford Bulletin of Economics & Statistics. The research findings have been featured in the media including BBC (Breakfast Television & the Working Lunch) as well as national broadsheets such as the Sunday Times. They are also embedded in the Centre’s executive education and graduate programmes as well as adopted through consultancy.
Andrew has acted as an advisor for organisations such as the European Commission, Business Link UK, GESAC (EU), Forbairt (the Irish Industrial Development Authority - IDA), Hudson, Schlumberger, Selex-Galileo, GCI UK, Bank of Ireland International Banking, and the Irish Music Rights Organisation. He has been a judge on panels of the Confederation of British Industries’ Growing Business Awards and also the Coutts Bank’s Family Business Awards.
He is a founding editor of the International Review of Entrepreneurship and has acted as a guest editor of the International Journal of Industrial Organization. He is on the editorial boards of the International Small Business Journal and the International Journal of Business Innovation and Research.
He is a graduate of the University of Oxford (D.Phil), the London School of Economics (M.Sc) and University College, Dublin (M.A).
In his spare time Andrew (doggedly) supports Leinster in rugby and Hibernian FC in soccer. He grew up in Dublin and played in a number of `new wave/punk` bands and yes, wisely continued his studies! Later he was Ents Manager at University College, Dublin and still accepts responsibility for Shane McGowan and the Pogues turning the University`s `End of Term Christmas Bash` from a mere turn of phrase into a vivid reality. On the sporting front, Andrew was an avid, if a bit of a rough cut, oarsman and won Torpids` blades at Oxford University with Balliol College back in 1992. These days he just about knocks out a 2k piece in 7 and half minutes on the rowing machine in his local gym.
