Research Projects

Banking Efficiency and Regulation

This project examines performance of banks in a number of developed and emerging areas, which include countries in Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia. Based on a combination of methods which consider selected input and output variables central to the operation of banks, the research provides information about the relative levels of efficiency of banks within a country and across countries. This research also discusses the main drivers for performance and highlights the importance of adequate regulatory frameworks in enhancing the operation of banks. For further information, contact Catarina Figueira.

States of "health" in the banking sector

This research investigates the measurement of the stages of development and competitveness in a number of banking systems across the world. It is based on the concept of cybernetic temperature first applied by Professor Jeremy Ramsden to a problem of bio-nanotechnology. The approach adopted in this research is to systematically analyse publicly available data, in order to compare banks which operate in different economic and political environments. The analysis is drawn from concepts based on systems theory applied to biology and nanotechnology, in order to create new methods able to answer questions such as whether to favour private over state ownership, indigenous over foreign banks, many small over few large banks, etc. This is a collaborative research between Professor Joseph Nellis, Catarina Figueira and Professor Jeremy Ramsden. EMBED Project

This project is aimed at raising the profile of repositories, with a view to improve the dissemination of the research produced at Cranfield University across the wider academic and practitioner communities. This is conducted via the use of a number of innovative tools which support the research work and showcase the finished output. This project is the result of a collaboration between Cranfield University and specifically the Economics Group, Robert Gordon University and an Education Consulting firm, Key Perspectives. This initiative is funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee. For further information, contact Catarina Figueira.
