MBA (Defence) To Launch September 2006
30 May 2006
A new MBA (Defence) will be delivered by Cranfield School of Management and the Defence College of Management and Technology at Shrivenham (Schools of Cranfield University).
The qualification has been developed to meet the needs of the defence sector and provides the opportunity to study for a more recognisable degree, being a redevelopment of the Master of Defence Administration, previously delivered by the Defence College of M&T at Shrivenham. The programme is designed for civil service and agency managers as well as defence industrial executives and those from the defence and security community, including those from the army, navy, air force and Ministry of Defence.
Programme Director Graham Clark says, “The programme will meet the need for those working in this sector to command a comprehensive portfolio of commercial management skills, enabling them to contribute more effectively towards MOD initiatives.”
The programme can be undertaken on a full or part time basis. Participants in the Defence MBA will study alongside students from the commercial and not-for-profit sectors in Part 1 of the programme while going on to take compulsory modules appropriate to the Defence sector in Part 2. In addition they will be required to complete a specific defence focused research project.
The programme will increase understanding of a wide range of management techniques, including leadership, change management, programme and project management and resource management within the defence context. Students will also gain a critical awareness of cultural, political and ethical similarities and differences and come to understand the importance of strategy, cross functional working and core business management, particularly within the international defence community.
Professor Ron Matthews (Academic Leader, Defence Management) says: “The programme will be welcomed by those in the Defence Community, indeed the MBA (Defence) reflects a growing interest both within the UK defence sector and the international defence community for management education.  It is a development of the existing MDA at Shrivenham but with a significant broadening to encompass the skills and knowledge one would expect to acquire from a traditional MBA programme.”
Full programme and application details can be obtained by contacting Maureen Williams, on 01234 754386, or e-mail: m.williams@cranfield.ac.uk.  More information about the programme is available at http://www.cranfieldMBA.info/defence
There is no official deadline for applications for the full-time programme (starting in September), but it is recommended that applications be submitted by the middle of July.  Applications for the part-time option (starting in January 2007) should be submitted by November.
