Finalists announced for 2010 Best Factory Awards

Cranfield School of Management is pleased to announce the UK manufacturers that have been short-listed for the 2010 Best Factory Awards.
The award programme that has been running for 19 years is organised by Cranfield School of Management in partnership with the magazine Works Management. The awards reward manufacturing excellence in the UK.
Among the contenders for the prestigious Toyota Factory of the Year Award are plants producing goods as diverse as magnets for MRI scanners and soot blowers for power stations.
Dr Marek Szwejczewski, Director of the Best Factory Awards commented: “The awards are part of a unique programme that celebrates the best manufacturers in the UK. This year we have seen an extremely high number of entries all of a very high calibre. This is extremely encouraging for UK manufacturing, showing the sector is very much alive and growing.
“All of those shortlisted have demonstrated how a dedicated approach to continuous improvement and innovation can deliver superior results and importantly have also continued to invest in their staff which is vital as the economy strengthens.”
The awards bring together the best manufacturers in the business to share best practice and to celebrate their achievements.
This year 17 plants have been shortlisted:
Bison Manufacturing in Swadlincote, Derbyshire – Producers of pre-stressed concrete hollowcore flooring units.
Clyde Bergemann in Bridgeton, Glasgow – The plant makes soot blowers for use in power stations.
Controlled Therapeutics in East Kilbride, Glasgow – Producers of controlled release pessary pharmaceuticals.
EMS Radio Fire & Security Systems in Herne Bay, Kent – The plant produces wireless fire detection systems.
Faurecia Automotive Seating in Banbury – Assemble seats and supply just-in-sequence to an automotive manufacturer.
Flakt Woods in Colchester, Essex – Manufacturers of equipment for buildings, tunnels and car parks.
General Mills in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland - Producers of “JusRol” pastry and pastry products.
Siemens Magnet Technology in Witney, Oxon – The plant makes large super conducting magnets for use in MRI scanners.
Olympus KeyMed in Southend, Essex – Manufacturers of workstations, suction & flushing pumps, insufflators, cleaning and disinfection equipment for medical endoscopy, rigid endoscopes, light sources and high speed video cameras for industrial and scientific applications.
Portable Foods Manufacturing Co in Wrexham, North Wales – Producers of cereal bars and snack bars.
Reckitt Benckiser in Derby - The plant makes air fresheners and household cleaners.
Siemens Traffic Solutions in Poole – Manufacturers of traffic products and control units.
Tamar Foods in Callington, Cornwall – Producers of pies, sausage rolls and savoury pasties.
Thales Missile Electronics in Basingstoke, Hampshire – The plant produces electronic components for defence systems.
Vaillant Group in Belper, Derbyshire – Manufacturers of domestic condensing boilers.
Vitacress Salads in St Mary Bourne, Andover, Hants – Produce washed, bagged salads.
Yara UK Limited in Pocklington, York – The plant produces foliar and micronutrient products for crops.
In total there are 13 awards: Best Process Plant Award Best Engineering Plant Award Best Electronics and Electrical Plant Award Best Household and General Products Plant Award Best SME People Management & Skills Development Award Supply Chain Award Most Improved Plant Award Health & Safety Award Innovation Award and Energy/Environment Award.
The overall winner will receive the Toyota Factory of the Year award and there is also a Judges’ Special Award. All entrants receive a free benchmarking report to help them measure themselves against their competitors, and to help them improve and innovate.
The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony taking place on 17 September at the Grand Connaught Rooms, Covent Garden, London.
